ArtAutun 2020

7 septembre 2020 by petra

ArtAutun is a biennial exhibition of contemporary art that unfolds in two locations in the city of Autun. As with the first edition, the curators are the Belgian artist-duo Renier & Depla. For the 2020 edition they have selected about thirty artists from Belgium and France. The premise is contemporary art, with a number of forays into works by renowned and lesser-known modern masters.

In Musée Rolin, where the main part of the exhibition was presented, the work entered into dialogue or confrontation with works from the permanent museum collection. The rest of the works were presented in the Panopticum, a former circular prison. This was a beautiful space in which the art came into its own, especially due to the rawness of the environment.

All in all, the whole thing exudes a bit of the atmosphere of Watou, not surprising given the roots of the curators. However, the entire entourage around the project is too pretentious in relation to the amount of art that was on display. There were enormous signs everywhere, there was a thick glossy catalog, but unfortunately this pretense was never fulfilled. Ergo, a slightly more modest setting would not have been out of place.

With regard to the art presented, the scent of old-fashioned contemporary art prevailed, quite logical given the age of the curators. The motto says it all: « We want to show what moved, amazed and remembered us in a mysterious way ».

If the expectations had not been set so high because of the publications in advance, it would have felt like a successful exhibition. But then again, the slight disappointment we now felt was more due to the setting than the actual art itself.

René Moreu in Château de Ratilly

6 septembre 2020 by petra

In Chateau de Ratilly, the annual summer exhibition of 2020 was devoted to the work by René Moreu. Moreu’s career is remarkable, given the fact that he contracted a retinal disease at the age of 23. Only at the age of 33, after partial healing of his eye-sight, he started a career as a painter and illustrator.
Nature plays an important role in his free work. And although he remained visually impaired, you can find remarkable subtle color differences in his work. The work in general is somewhat design-like with Art Brut influences, and is further characterized by the lack of depth / layering.

In addition to his artistry, he was active as an editor of the magazine Vaillant and as an illustrator of many children’s books. René Moreu passed away in May this year at the age of 99.

Les figures de la terre in the CRAC

6 septembre 2020 by petra

« Les Figures de la Terre »by artist Dominique Rousseau formed the summer exhibition 2020 at the CRAC de Fontenoy.

Dominique Rousseau’s work is based on what he calls his « papers ». These papers, which he makes himself, are impregnated with different materials that have been collected in different parts of the world: rainforest, savannah, beach, etc. He then creates his landscapes from this base paper.
(…)
In short, after using paper as a basis for drawing, painting and etching, Rousseau entered the fundamental plasticity of the universe and discovered geological layers in its fibers and pigments. The artist, who started with architecture, is now concerned with architextuur.  (Kenneth White over Dominique Rousseau)

There are beautiful textures in the work, but it is all a bit more of the same. The technique is very nice, but the final images remain somewhat like large totems. And the fact that they are all the same size reinforces this feeling. It are pretty pictures, but for us just too much skill, too little imagination. Yes, (sometimes) beautiful in the details, but it doesn’t work as a whole.
